Welcome to the CRTPA Regional Transit Study Website!

Welcome to the project website for the Capital Region - Regional Transit Study. This website provides an overview of the Regional Transit Study that is underway to address the transit demand and need in the Capital Region - Gadsden, Leon, Jefferson, and Wakulla Counties. All of these counties have experienced significant growth over the last twenty years and this study will help to analyze the future transit needs.

Introduction
The Capital Region Transportation Planning Agency (CRTPA) and its planning partners understand the need to guide the future of public transportation in the region. Recent events such as record gas prices and climate change demonstrate the need to shape our communities in a more efficient manner. Simply widening roads to provide for transportation growth is no longer the best and only option to consider.

Transit provides our region a solution that can reduce our national dependence on foreign oil, reduce traffic congestion, improve air quality, and provide a wider range of mobility options. As the region continues to grow, there is an increasing need to expand transit services to outlying parts of Leon, Gadsden, Jefferson, and Wakulla counties and to coordinate urban and rural transit services.

Study Overview
The CRTPA is undertaking a ten-month Regional Transit Study (RTS) which began in February 2009. The study is being coordinated with other planning and transportation studies underway in the Capital Region. The goals of the RTS are to:
  • Develop a long-term vision for transit in the Capital Region (Gadsden, Jefferson, Leon and Wakulla)
  • Prepare an assessment of future transit needs for the region
  • Identify and assess funding strategies
  • Identify an organizational structure that will promote the development of a seamless, regional transit system
  • Develop an implementation strategy and timeline
Additional study areas include transit service improvements, funding options and strategies, a service development strategy and business plan, as well as development review guidelines and design standards.

Meetings
Two (2) rounds of community meetings will be held during the course of the RTS. Each round will include a meeting in the four counties within the study area (Leon, Gadsden, Jefferson, and Wakulla) and one in the City of Tallahassee. The meetings will be held in conjunction and cooperation with the CRTPA – RMP meetings in each of the four counties.

The first round of meetings was held April 14th and 16th in conjunction with the CRTPA-Regional Mobility Plan and informed the public and other stakeholders of study goals and elicited input on transit needs, opportunities and priorities in the region and its communities.

The second set of community meetings was held on November 16th and 17th in each of the study area counties.  They focused on the draft study findings and recommendations.   The meetings included a presentation, maps, graphics and an informational newsletters. Attendees were asked to provide comments on the recommendations through a comment form or via the website.  Information gathered through these meetings will be incorporated into the study’s findings.
